The Scaffolding Association has welcomed the publication of the Government’s Road Safety Strategy, which places renewed emphasis on work-related road risk and the role of employers, fleets and organisational culture in improving safety outcomes.

As a sector that relies heavily on vans, HGVs and specialist vehicles – and with many workers driving for work or operating at the roadside – road safety is a material issue for the scaffolding and wider construction industry.

The Strategy highlights that around one in three road fatalities involve someone driving or riding for work, and shifts focus away from individual blame towards systems, training, leadership and the effective use of technology.

The Scaffolding Association also notes the proposed National Work-Related Road Safety Charter, which is intended to be piloted and co-designed with industry, signalling an expectation that sectors with operational and vehicle-specific risks will help shape future frameworks.

In collaboration with the Road Haulage Association, last year the Scaffolding Association launched a Driver CPC-approved training course focused on safe loading and vehicle checks for scaffolders. The course is designed to address practical, real-world risks associated with scaffolding transport, including load security, vehicle condition and daily safety checks.

The Scaffolding Association will continue to work constructively with policymakers and industry partners as the Strategy is taken forward, ensuring that the realities facing scaffolding businesses are properly understood in future policy development.
