The Scaffolding Association expresses disappointment in the Autumn Budget, highlighting that it offers limited support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the construction sector, the industry with the highest concentration of SMEs in the UK.
Robert Candy, CEO of the Scaffolding Association, said; “Despite being home to more SMEs than any other sector, construction businesses have been left with rising costs and minimal relief. While the rise in the National Living Wage supports workers, it places additional pressure on small businesses already grappling with increasing running costs. Coupled with the hike in employer National Insurance contributions, these changes will further strain small businesses, making it harder for them to remain competitive and profitable.”
Robert added; “The Autumn Budget’s approach to Business Rates will leave many small businesses in the construction sector facing increases, with changes to the Small Business Multiplier and Small Business Rates Relief resulting in more financial burden on firms. Coupled with other tax rises, has potential to discourage long-term investment, which is critical for competitiveness and growth. For a sector experiencing a talent shortage, investment in business growth and development is essential, and these changes may stifle that needed momentum.”
Concluding Robert said; “The Scaffolding Association remains committed to tirelessly supporting the scaffolding and access sector, championing the need for a level playing field where small and medium-sized businesses can compete fairly and we are actively working with policymakers to push for reforms that achieve this. Our focus is on ensuring that responsible businesses are not disadvantaged by unfair competition, so they can continue to thrive and contribute to the economy. Through advocacy, guidance, and dedicated support, we stand firmly by our members to promote a balanced and competitive industry landscape.”
